How is Embark different from other dog DNA testing companies?
We’re proud to offer the most accurate dog DNA test on the market today. We invest in cutting-edge science to give you the most useful results. Every dog tested with Embark contributes to research that can help all dogs live longer, healthier lives.
Can I message my dog’s relatives?
Yes! The Chat feature is available for dogs with privacy settings toggled to “Public” for breed data. To receive notifications about messages, visit your account Settings to turn message notifications on.
Can I access my dog’s raw data?
Yes! You can download your dog’s raw DNA data anytime after your dog’s results are ready. Once we receive your dog’s swab, it typically takes 2-4 weeks for us to process your dog’s swab.
What is a village dog?
They’re free-ranging, free-breeding dogs whose ancestors were indigenous to a geographic area, pre-dating modern “breeds.” Our co-founders have studied them on six continents since 2007 in their efforts to understand the history of the domestic dog!
What are Embark’s privacy policies?
Nothing is shared without your permission. Sometimes, we share anonymized, aggregated data with research partners in an effort to better understand canine genetics. If you don’t want to participate in that research, you can opt out during activation.
Know your dog. Better.
It all started with village dogs. Did you know that most of the dogs in the world are not descended from modern breeds? The majority of dogs in the world are a unique kind of dog, called village dogs.
Village dogs are free-ranging, free-breeding dogs whose ancestors were indigenous to a geographic area. To learn more about these special dogs, our founders spent years traveling the world and swabbing dogs in remote areas of Europe, Asia, and South America, along with a Cornell University-led research team. Through this work they discovered the origins of the dog in Central Asia, and also identified genetic regions involved in domestication and local adaptation. At Embark, we’re proud to be the only dog DNA test that can identify village dogs, with the largest village dog reference panel of any canine genetics company.
Village dogs are important because they help us understand topics like where dogs came from, the history of domestic dogs, and how dogs and humans learned to live together. They were crucial to the rise of the modern breeds–and to the founding of Embark!
So, while a village dog does not have ancestry from modern breeds, their ancestors may have contributed to the founding of today’s dog breeds. Although they’re not recognized by kennel clubs as a breed, they are genetically identifiable, with many different village dog populations around the world. When we identify a dog as a village dog, it’s not because we can’t figure out what breeds are in the dog. Each type of village dog has a unique genetic signature that we can use to identify village dog ancestry.
What is a Supermutt? At Embark, we take pride in transparency. If a percentage of your dog’s breed mix doesn’t match any breeds in our database, or if it’s too small a percentage for us to be sure that it’s accurate, we’ll tell you. Other dog DNA tests may show other breeds in your dog’s results to make up that small percentage – breeds that may or may not actually be present.
“Supermutt” refers to a portion of ancestry that is from significantly far back in a dog’s family tree and therefore cannot be as confidently identified as more recently inherited breeds. Our ancestry algorithm works by finding identical segments of DNA between your dog and the purebred dogs in our reference dataset. These long identical stretches of DNA are more likely to reflect recent ancestry, whereas shorter segments reflect more distant ancestry.
Many dogs descend from other dogs that were themselves mixed breed. The further in the past, your dog has purebred ancestors, the smaller the identical DNA segments match our reference dataset are. In some cases, the best matches to our reference dataset are so small (reflecting very distant ancestry) that they can no longer be as confidently assigned to any one particular breed. Instead these are assigned to the “Supermutt” percentage. Within the “Supermutt” result, we provide insight into which breeds are most likely to be distant ancestors.
Why breed results can be surprising. Sometimes looks can be deceiving! And your dog’s breeds may not obviously match their appearance. While it’s fun to guess which breeds might make up your dog, visual breed identification is notoriously unreliable—studies have shown that visual breed ID is wrong over 80% of the time!. Less than 1% of a dog’s 20,000 genes impact appearance. There is so much variation among dogs in general that visual or behavioral ID is generally an unreliable way to diagnose a dog’s ancestry.
Even in single-breed dogs, it is ultimately several genetic trait results (and not necessarily their breed) that are responsible for appearance. While breeders tend to strive for consistency in several of these traits to match a breed standard, this in no way precludes the possibility of a surprising outcome in a single-breed puppy. Additionally, dogs with a single-breed result can sometimes have a very small percentage of DNA (about 1-5%) that represents a separate breed. These very small proportions are typically undetectable by a DNA test, but can yield some surprising looks in an otherwise single-breed dog.

Good deal!
The test was easy to do. The prepaid shipping label was nice. Results didn’t take too long.
super detailed!
We adopted a dog from a rescue organization, and trying to figure out her breed mix was driving me nuts. We were told she was potentially a german shepherd mix, but we guessed she had some snow dog and maybe akita mixed in. The swab process was simple, straightforward, and we were given lots of updates along the way (which I very much appreciated!) The included postage was enough to send the swab back from BC to the US. Her breed mix was akita, german shepherd, malamute, husky, golden retriever, and ‘super mutt.’I ended up upgrading the report to include health reports to see if there were any genetic predispositions to illness (our previous rescue dog was a purebred husky and was quite ill). We found out she’s genetically healthy, and the report also broke down her likely colouring, adult weight, muscling, and appetite. I’m a bit of a genetics nerd, so I found this all quite fascinating! The test isn’t cheap, but I think it’s great info for anyone wanting to know more about their dog. I found the results to be quite accurate – the predicted weight, muscle, and colouring were almost 100% accurate. We also found out potential close ‘relatives’ with others that have done breed testing on their dogs. There was also an option to send a condensed version of the report to our vet. I’m not sure if it will be of much use to them, but at the very least it rules out any genetic causes of illness in the future. Overall, I would definitely recommend this test for anyone that wants more info on their dog. If I had a purebred dog, I’d be more likely just to order a test for genetic health issues – but for our ‘rescue mix,’ this was fantastic!
Brings you closer to your rescue dog
We rescued Willy when he was estimated to be 7 years old. Unsure about a lot of his past, apart from some horrific details, this was an amazing way to get to know our boy better. The main information this kit offers is their breed and relatives. 4.9% of his breed was unresolved, so we werenât sure what that meant. At least they provided an ancestors breed for us? The mix totally made sense as he is a bit bigger than typical Pomeranians. This was also used for his insurance, as there is typically a lower cost for mixed breeds.Willy had a LOT of relatives. The relationship for âclose familyâ was pretty vague though. We figured a lot might be his grandchildren, since he was used as a breeding dog for 7 years at a puppy mill. We had some meaningful conversations with a few of his relativesâ owners, while bringing awareness to the prevalence & horrors of puppy mills. We ended up also purchasing the health + traits add on afterwards. It was an additional cost but they used the same DNA from before, so we didnât have an mail another sample. It was interesting to learn that he had one genetic health risk and we plan to bring that up to his veterinarian.I hope embark brings back the age test kit! I saw that a while back but it was discontinued for some reason. Weâd love to know Willyâs exact age & birthday so we can celebrate it, along with his âgotcha dayâ!
Not worth the money
I bought this with very low expectations, and was still disappointed. The kit is Very easy to do but if you live in Canada, you will need to pay an extra 3$ for shipping, they don’t cover enough. It took a few weeks for the whole process. I was told previously that my dog is a combination of Spitz, mini Australian Shepherd and Jack Russell. The results were half believable and half absolutely ridiculous. Village Dog, sure. But Poodle and Peke? Less likely. It seems very made up based on the questionnaire you fill out beforehand. You can try it if you don’t mind blowing over 100$ for funsies.
What fun.
Weâve been thinking about doing this for a while and Embark has always had good ratings. One of our two rescues was what we thought a âsheppitâ being part shepherd and part pit Bull or bully breed and weâve always been curious if we were right.Recently they had a sale on the Embark site and even with the sale because of the exchange and shipping it was cheaper on Amazon so we bit the bullet and ordered. There was some confusion as we read online that since itâs an American company you have to add additional postage to the âprepaidâ package before mailing it away. The Amazon Embark order already came with additional Canadian stamps on it so nothing was needed. We did the swab and mailed it away with the Canadian postage that was already added to the envelope for us and waited. It took a few weeks but we got tracking updates as we went along and then we got updates once the swab was received and was being processed. We got our results and they send you a TON of info including the breeds, the family trees on both sides, how they got the results, info on other dogs in their data base that have DNA matches so you could (in theory) maybe set up doggy play dates or meet up if youâre close which is cool.It turns out our girl is part shepherd but part American bulldog (not Pit) but which does explain the sticky pit like build.Either way it was fun to do and gave us some cool insights and information.
Works great! And super easy!
The results showed my dogâs brother, who also had it done, so I know there is some valid science behind this one. More accurate than DNAmyDog which Iâd tried previously. Great to have information to share about my rescue with my vet!
First time I used a product like this product. Easey to use and compared to the other brands not a bad price. However, one has to read what you as an owner wished to know about your pet. Different brands contain different information. I just wanted her DNA. I can’t say it was a quick process getting the information back, but the company is very good about emailing you as to the status of your purchase. I would recommend this product to others.
I was so impressed with the customer service I received. I received the kit on time and carried out the swab and sent it off. Unfortunately, my swab got stuck enroute and I reached out to Embark who helped me track it and they reached a decision to resend a kit at no cost. Kit arrived in no time and I sent it off. Embark informs you when the swab has arrived, swab extracted, etc. So at every stage you are notified which helps build up the excitement. I won’t spoil the rest however the results were very interesting and what surprised me most was the accuracy and rhe detailed breakdown. They also share information of close relatives and the picture of my dog’s sibling was a spitting image of her. Forgot to say the only information I provided was my dog’s name and swab as I purposely did not share pics or her breed type so it was amazing that through science I was provided with mind blowing results. I definitely recommend this product.
Skickade iväg testet och de tappades bort så helt kostnadsfritt skickade embark ett nytt sample åt mig. Smidigt och så snabbt som de bara kunde gå
This company was recommended to me by two people. I tried it for my adopted chichuahua mix. Embark was very helpful with making sure the application and sample was correct before submitting. They are efficient and thorough. The sent emails updating me every step of the way. The results were a wealth of information on all of their findings with detailed explanations. Iâm very happy they were able to satisfy my curiosity and I will definitely recommend them to others parents who are curious.
