The set turned out to be smaller than anticipated. It contains enough cubes to construct the figures shown in the picture, but given the cost, it seems scant. Even for adults, the limited variety could lead to quick disinterest. Don’t get me wrong, these cubes are very well-made, and the app is fun and easy to use. But this set gives no freedom for creativity. Considering all this, I find this set’s value questionable.
When I asked my daughter about getting these Pixio magnetic blocks, I was concerned that my two grandsons already might have enough magnetic building blocks. You can’t have too many, she told me.Unfortunately, her answer only is true if the blocks are easy to play with. At least in the two sets that we received, however, it’s very difficult to orient the magnetic fields correctly to be able to build anything. As my 8-1/2 years old grandson is quite experienced with magnetic building blocks, and my daughter also tried them herself, I have to believe the problem is with the blocks. Since others have reported a better experience, perhaps the problem is one of quality control in their manufacture. Regardless, I’m unable to recommend them.
These cubes are quite fun to play with. They are magnetic on all sides which can make them a little tricky to get them to snap together correctly. The paint finish is nice and smooth and seems pretty sturdy. The ocean creature designs that come in the book are fun to put together. My favorite way to play with these is like they are a squishy ball. I hold the whole set in my hand and just smush them around. All that said, I don’t understand why this set costs $45 as of November 2023. The cubes are very small, just over 1/4 of an inch. They don’t come with any way to store them once you take them out of their individual bags. At this price point, storage should be included, even if it’s just a little drawstring bag.
For the current deal of $35, Iâd recommend these. My kids love Magnatiles and Tegu Blocks, so these combine the fun of the magnets but also give a Plus Plus feel as well. The main thing is that they are teeny tiny, so I wonât let them play with them much until my youngest is capable of not putting things in her mouth. Also the packaging is really boring. They donât look as expensive as they are and donât look overly exciting as a gift. I wouldnât pay the $45 or $55 list price myself, but if you donât have babies around and can get a deal, they are fun to mess around with and would be good for traveling too.
This magnets are very cool and keep my 5 y/o busy but I do think they are a little overpriced, I thought they would be bigger.
