Description

The Magic Pee and Other Surprises is a fun illustrated children’s book for toilet learning/training without shaming. The term “grown-up” is used instead of “parent” to include a variety of family constellations and caregivers. The story is based on personal experience when the author, Bethelene Hart was teaching her own toddler to use the potty. As a childcare professional, Ms. Hart didn’t like the traditional way toileting was explained using the word “accident” and came up with the terms surprise and magic pee instead. The story is humorous and sensitive to a child learning a new skill. Check out more about the author at parentingbyhart.com

  1. A Fun and Engaging Potty Training Book for Little Ones!
I bought this book for my wife that is an educator, here is her review:I was recently given this book and my overall impressions were that it was a charming and playful way to teach young children about the process of using the potty. The story was engaging in that the main character Ruby finds themselves in situations that are easy for little ones to relate to. The use of the words “magic pee” makes the process feel less intimidating. The illustrations in this book are vibrant and captivating. They complement the story well and help hold the attention of younger children reading the book, making the concept of potty training more fun. The book takes a gentle, positive, inclusive approach towards potty training. Rather than focusing on the challenges, it highlights the excitement and rewards of learning to use the potty. The language and concepts are perfectly suited for younger readers, with simple sentences and a relatable narrative. It’s short enough to keep little ones interested, but long enough to get the message across effectively. This is a great supplementary book to introduce the concept of potty training. I’d highly recommend for parents of younger children who need a little magical encouragement to get started! Looking forward to reading more books by Bethelene!

  2. Adorable and shame free
Such a sweet book. Love the shame free approach! The tone of the book is fun and the illustrations are beautiful. Love the language of “grown up” rather than mom, dad or parent to be inclusive of all types of families.

  3. Great children’s story!!!
This children’s story is well written and a joy to read over and over again because the children absolutely love it. Will be buying more copies for all the grandkids.

  4. Wonderful new children’s book
This was a wonderfulBook for my team and kiddos at school. This was written with such heart and I amSo excited for more children to read it.

  5. Encourages curiosity instead of embarrassment!
What a uniquely positive and encouraging book to help kids (and grownups!) approach such an important milestone. Filled me with warm fuzzies. I bought one for each of my nephews and nieces right away. Hoping for more from this author!

  6. Loved this book, we use the terms regularly!
My children loved this book, even my six year old who was potty trained ages ago! We still use the terms magic pee and surprise pee and I have found that adopting that language into our vocabulary has generated more positive reactions out of my children. For example, when I need to get them to try and use the toilet before leaving the house, I invite them to see whether there is going to be a magical pee in the toilet, which is more persuasive than generally just asking them to go to the bathroom before we go.

  7. A positive way to potty train
A little one in our family circle was reluctant to use the potty or the toilet. After trying the ideas in this book his “grown-ups” had success! The author has a fantastic idea to use the term “surprise pees” instead of “accidents” and I wish I had know this years ago when my own children were training. There’s no advantage to calling out “accidents” or making a perfectly natural thing sound like something bad. I loved this book and our little cousin who is training, loved it too.

  8. Positive and Playful Potty Learning
This book’s playful nature makes it an amazing book to read to children, whether in a classroom setting or at home. Using the term “magic pee” is a clever and easy way to engage children in their potty training, while taking the pressure off them. Saying “Surprise pee” as opposed to “accident” changes the perspective to be a learning opportunity for children to practice listening to their bodies. As an Early Childhood Educator, I will absolutely be reading this book to my class and using the terms “magic pee” and “surprise pee.” The focus on inclusivity and gender neutrality among family dynamics is refreshing and encourages the reader or listener to insert their own grown ups into the story. The illustrations and expressions capture the children’s emotions beautifully. Will be recommending to parents and educators alike.

  9. So much of parenting tends to make the child WRONG, which can cause layers of mini-traumas that affect the child for their whole life. This positive, short book not only shows a creative way to help your little one with toilet-training… it also can provide a metaphor for other things that the child will be learning along the way of their growth. Finding creative ways to be loving and supportive instead of critical and diminishing. I hope that parents and pre-school teachers will see the simple brilliance of this approach.
