I wanted something to catch the drops of let-down on one boob while my little one was nursing on the boob. Originally I had used the Haka pump for this purpose, but it hangs down too far and interrupts with nursing and she kept kicking it off with those active little legs! This has fit the bill. It stays in place by nestling into your bra cup. So while I’m nursing on the L side, for example, I keep the bra cup in place on the right side and slide this in. I usually catch about a half ounce per side — it all adds up, and it keeps the bra from getting wet with leakiness. I have quit using cotton breast shields/pads almost entirely since buying these. While I was originally only going to use them when nursing, now I keep them on most of the day, and it allows me to catch the early drops as I start to get full again and close to a next feeding (but if she’s still asleep and not ready yet). I’ve been “nursing on demand” and this has been invaluable. Important to keep the little hole up at the top. The one thing is you have to be careful not to bed over (ex. to empty dishwasher) or you will drip out the top and get your shirt wet. What I do is just try to keep an empty bottle nearby and empty these once I start to get a little pool collecting. If I stay upright, I think I can collect about an ounce per side before this gets too full. Also, I have actually been wearing them at night as well – again, to catch the drips once a side gets full between feedings. What I do in this case is, if I’m sleeping on my right side, then I rotate the little hole from 12:00 (if your areola is a clock and that’s the top!) to about 1:30 (halfway between 12 and 3) and that way when I’m lying in bed, it can catch without dripping out. If I turn over halfway through the night then I just rotate whole to that 45-degree angle on the opposite side. This sleeping method isn’t foolproof but pretty darn good and get to collect milk while sleeping which feels pretty darn productive! Proud to say these were part of a regime that helped me move from 50% formula to all breast milk! (though of course nothing wrong with formula supplementation, ladies, we all are doing best we can…!) Happy to answer any questions. For reference I was a 30 A-B pre-pregnancy. I find that if I wear a padded bra (kind of like a sports bra), I can pop these in and wear them and they aren’t too noticeable as long as shirt is flowy (ex. a work blouse) or if I am wearing a tighter ruched maternity t-shirt, then I just pop an open sweater or scarf over to distract a little. Essentially it just makes me look like a C cup or as if I was wearing one of those “add a size” Victoria’s secret bras… ha! But don’t wear these if you’re in a shirt that can’t handle a little spilling if it happens on accident. Also of note, these are surprisingly soft/comfortable to wear all day. I could try to upload pics later if any of you have more specific questions. I think these were totally worth the price. Also, comes with two pairs, so you can have one by the sink being washed while you are wearing the other. Also, to wash, it comes apart in two pieces so easy. I normally don’t write reviews, but after 5 visits with lactation specialists and a lot of reading on KellyMom and other websites, and a struggle to get my supply to meet demand, these have been a real lifesaver and I want other women to know (I work in public health research, family planning specifically!). Getting that extra ounce or so per feeding cycle (and in the in-between cycle moments) has helped get me closer to those lovely 4-ounce bottles. Especially smaller-chested women, when a lot of the nursing-pumping-milk collection stuff seems geared towards more well-endowed moms. Good luck everyone with your breastfeeding goals! Oh, and note: this doesn’t “suck” out the milk like a Haka pump, it just passively accepts whatever drips out.
This is such a great idea. I can’t believe nobody thought of this sooner.Rather than leaking into your clothes, scratchy disposable pads (that never stick properly), or the soft reusable pads (that give you “swamp boob” the second the you leak), you can now collect and save your leaked milk without having to do anything extra! I’m only a couple weeks into breastfeeding with these and I get an extra ounce every time I use them.Pros:- you’re saving milk you would otherwise waste, duh!- super easy to clean- so comfortable I often forget I’m wearing themCons:- the breathable/pour-able hole at the top is a nice feature…until you bend over. Be prepared to spill a lot until you get used to not bending forward more than 60° or laying down with these on.- they’re about 1/2in thick so wear a looser bra or one you can easily adjust as you become engorged. Wearing a bra that fits you normally will leave unappealing and sometimes uncomfortable marks on your breast. If you’re planning on investing in new bras for this period of your life, keep that in mind prior to purchasing.
The hole for the nipple is quite large, so the chance of spilling is high – which is it did. It wasn’t even halfway full and spilled out because of the nipple hole opening. Silicone is nice and soft but the design is defective
These are the best milk collectors Iâve very used. Very easy to use when needing it quick. They hold a good amount of milk around 1 to 2 ounces. Iâve used the hoka and these are by far better. Wear a size 40- d and the nipple hole is perfect.
