Marble Run Magnetic Building Toys
Bought this for a child for Christmas. The child and parents seemed happy.
(At the end of this review, I mention another alternative I like better than this set, but first my thoughts on this set.) I like the concept behind this toy, and I think for the right kid it could be awesome, but there are a few things to keep in mind:1- This marble run adds a layer of complexity to magnetic tiles, and not all kids are up for that. Some might get easily frustrated with the marble run set. Even more patient kids will probably need/want parental help. Little kids will definitely need help, and older kids who might be able to use this independently probably won’t be interested in it because they’ve moved on to other types of toys.2- Most of the pieces aren’t magnetic. Only the square tiles are magnetic. The slide pieces attach to the squares.3- The number of pieces that come in this set aren’t going to make a very big/intricate slide, but assembling that slide is going to hard for the kid. Rephrased, a lot of effort for an underwhelming creating.A year or two ago, I bought a marble run set that’s compatible with Duplo Legos. (The one I bought isn’t made by Lego, just an off-brand). Similar concept to the magnetic tile marble run, but easier for kids to build. I’m not sure why the magnetic tile marble run is harder, since it’s basically the same concept, but I did find it to be more complicated with a less exciting end product. Personally, if you’re wanting a marble run set, I’d give the Duplo type a try rather the magnetic tile one. It’s more versatile and easier for kids to use without adult help. (No, Lego didn’t bribe me to say that. The set I bought was from an off-brand. I just think this type of marble run would work better for most kids.)I don’t think the magnetic tile set is bad, per se (hence the three stars). I just don’t think it’ll work well for the target age range (3-8 years). It’s a nice idea, but there are better alternatives available.
Adding the abilty to create a marble run using magnetic tiles is a fun concept. Our kids had a blast using it. Please note my wife misspoke in the video. It comes with enough to make marble runs but you are seeing it with additonal magnetic tile sets.There are some important details to consider when buying this.1. Instructions stack the maganetic tiles with little to no supports. This is okay on a hard surface and still requires your kids to be gentle to not tip the tiles over. This is where having other tile sets comes in handy to build extra supports.2. May be best to not show your kids the instructions. I don’t even know why half the designs are shown. Kids want to play marbles, not make fancy shapes. Half the instuctions show designs where the marble can’t be inserted or designs where the marble would have to defy gravity. I mean seriously.3. The length of the run is limited with just one set. I say this because if you can imagine a perfect stacking system as the tiles are designed, that means there is no slope for the ball to drop. If you create drops and slides, you’ll have to use twice the pieces to turn the chutes into tubes or the marble will launch off the track. There are some tricks you can do with the tiles to create a slight drop but your are limited in design due to the nature of same sized tiles.4. The interlocking of the chutes to the tiles is tough for our 4 year old. Also when disassembling you have to be careful because they lock so well, your kids can’t just knock over the design without risk to cracking the locking area on the tubes.So while overall we are happy with this, it is important to be aware of the above concerns.
This product is advertised as for ages three and up, but, in my opinion, three is way too young to use this independently. There is a book of designs, but many of the pictured designs can’t be built because they use more pieces than are included in this set, and that is frustrating. That said, we were able to build some neat designs of our own imagination, by using a stool and child’s table that we have in the play room. You can build simple designs from the pieces included and it’s a colorful, fun set to play with. It’s got possibilities for problem-solving and creativity, especially if you try to incorporate other items you have on hand to make up for the lack of building pieces. This toy has a lot of potential if you use some ingenuity.
We gave these to our 4.5 year old son for Christmas and I was hoping weâd love them but theyâre kind of frustrating to play with. I took one star off because the magnets arenât that strong, I was hoping they would be as strong as magnatiles but they definitely are not. I took off another star because when you line all the pieces up and everything is connected, prices start coming undone. They have the holes and the connector pieces but they donât hold strong enough so it starts to fall apart which is extremely annoying. My kid likes them and theyâre nice and colorful but he gets frustrated because nothing holds well.
