Superb meat thermometer that will ensure you never waste an expensive cut of meat ever again
It’s not the most intuitive thing to use. Just so you know, the base needs to be pretty close to the probe at all times and the phone needs to be connected to the base. My Meater is very prone to losing connection. It’s mostly just annoying as the app saves all progress even after losing connection, so a quick reset fixes it.But the recipes and the system it gives you to cook virtually any meat, be it turkey or chicken or any cut of steak / roast, is almost perfect. I’ve made multiple ribeye steaks, striploin, and yesterday did a full 4kg prime rib over 6 hours of cook time. I’ve never once before made perfect medium rare prime rib that’s fully cooked throughout. Sure, I’m not professional chef, but it’s nice not wasting $100 worth of meat and having a meal that everybody is raving about. The recipes provided by Meater in the app are great with awesome videos and step by step instructions, as well as reasoning for each step. But you don’t have to use it if you know the temps you need to reach and the proper techniques to cooking meat. I’ve used it to learn how to roast meat low and slow and the results are just divine every time. The temps are completely accurate. The done-ness every time I’ve used it has always been perfect too, right down to the resting time. There’s even graphs inside the app so you can track the oven air temperature (which fluctuates quite a lot surprisingly), and internal meat temperature. Estimated cooking times are the best too. It’s given me some really good insights on how much to adjust cook time for when you’re opening the oven every 30 minutes to baste the meat. No more guessing, so it’s always consistently perfect. No need to rely on any archaic methods like pushing in the meat or stabbing with a knife then using your gut feeling.I really think if you spend a lot of time cooking expensive meats or roasting birds / meats for half a day, you need to get one of these. The only downsides are this doesn’t work on thin cuts of meat (the instructions say not to use this if the probe cannot be completely inside the meat) and the app has a lot of disconnects. But other than that it’s a very solid recommendation!
Fantastic Product!
I don’t often write product reviews but felt compelled todo so on this one. I read a lot of the reviews here prior to buying this and they are truly polarizing. People either love it or hate it. There are a lot of negative reviews which caused me to pause before deciding to buy it. First and foremost, I bought the Meater Plus (50m range), from Amazon Canada, in March 2021. Secondly, my intended use for this product is not something hard core like a smoker, a fire pit, or a pig roaster and I’ve never owned a product like this before so perhaps my bar isn’t as high as other reviewers. Until now, all I’ve ever used is a plain, cheap, and simple analog thermometer that displays ambient temp and internal temp. My intended use cases for this product is for roasts in the oven and everyday BBQ outdoors, right outside my house. I want to limit the number of trips back and forth to check the meat (taking time and disturbing the ambient temperature) and am hoping to improve the consistency of my cooks (perfect internal temperature). Living in Canada where I BBQ in the winter, opening the lid to the BBQ to check the meat is detrimental to the heat and makes it very challenging to produce good outcomes consistently.I just had the opportunity to use the Meater Plus for the first time at Easter. I roasted a turkey and a ham in the oven it it performed very well. I had my analog thermometer in the meat along with the Meater and can validate that they were taking the same measurements (ambient and internal temperatures) within a couple degrees from one another. In terms of the range, I didn’t really push the limits on this one since it was indoor roasting but I can say that the App stayed connected the entire time (5+ hours) and I was all over my house with my SmartPhone. For the cooking time, I followed the App’s directions closely and it produced excellent results with the two roasts being juicy and tender. The App itself is awesome! In addition to the estimated cook time, which takes a lot of the guess work out of planning the oven logistics for a large holiday meal, I also love the charting capability which taught me a thing or two about my convection oven and how it is inconsistent and inaccurate with it’s heating. I also really like the configurable alerts. I used one such alert on the ham to remind me when to add my glaze before the end of the cook. For BBQ, I intend to add additional alerts for ambient temperature rising and falling suddenly in the BBQ to alert me immediately to flare ups on the grill or running out of propane.Full disclosure, as I said above, I did not push the limits on the range nor did I try the range extending feature with multiple smart phones over WiFi. I also have not yet tried this probe in an outdoor BBQ to test the connectivity through the exterior walls and the BBQ itself. I will amend this review once I try it and report back. I’m hoping the Bluetooth alone will be adequate and I won’t need to leave another phone near the BBQ while I’m cooking.Lastly, on initial setup, I noted that many reviewers here reporting the probe not connecting at all despite being right beside the charging box. I also encountered that issue when first opening the product, and was stumped for a little while, but ultimately realized that the charging box comes with a small piece of paper between the battery cathode and the connection in the box to ensure the battery stays new. The downside of this is that the probe itself is not charged when you first open the product despite the fact that the box is fully functional using it’s brand new battery. So if you’re having a hard time connecting it initially (flashing red light on the box), remove the paper from the battery compartment, place the probe back into the box and simply let the probe charge for a few hours. So far, I give this 5 stars. Some will say that it’s a too pricey but, for me, it’s worth the price if it gives me more data and has the built in intelligence to estimate the cook time. In the end, it hits all the requirements for me by allowing me to focus my time on other meal prep and/or socialize with guests while relying on the app to feed me real time alerts including telling me when the meat is ready to come off the heat.
Great tool for perfect meat preparation
I bought this for my husband as a gift and it is still his favourite tool! It is easy to use with the app and consistently helps us cook meats to the perfect doneness! It is also easy to clean and takes up very little room in our utensil drawer. We highly recommend this- especially if you are looking for a perfect gift for the holidays!
Great tool to have.
This probe is a great addition to our kitchen. Received it as a gift for Christmas, and put it to work right away with our turkey dinner that day.Never used any devices in the past, and generally did the “pull the leg test”. Usually cooking the bird for over 4.0 hrsWow, just over 3.0 hours (try to buy the same size bird) and the Meater said it was done (we didn’t quite believe it). Took the bird out and it was done to perfection!! Maybe even better!!We are believers now, and have used it with a prime rib roast meal and a pork steak meal, again cooked to perfection.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!The only con is, the connectivity is kinda weak and keeps saying lost connection.(Nothing gets a 5 star rating)
Fish, steak, pork… PERFECT! I am not a cook. I wouldn’t know how long is too long for the different cuts of meat. The guide on the app makes it perfect. Although it does sometimes loose connection between the meater and the phone. Not enough to mark down a rating.
La carne queda en el término correcto. La app es muy fácil de usar. Totalmente satisfecho
I use my BBQ on a daily basis and have tested a lot of BBQ thermometers, and NONE delivers the quality that Meater does or the ease of use in the app.Is it expensive? Yes.Is it worth the price? Without a doubt.
I know the Meater is expensive but on this occasion I believe I got what I payed for. The instructions and web support that come with the probe and are on the web are quite adequate. The probe was easy to pair with my phone and once that was done things were ready to move on. I put the probe in a large joint of pork, used the app to get the end result I wanted and a couple of hours or so later I finished up with a perfectly cooked pork joint. The meat can be cooked to any condition from rare to pulled and cooking and resting times are also advised. I don’t cook turkeys nowadays but the amount of consternation cooking one of those on Xmas day can cause is a good enough reason to buy one of these if ever there was one. The chances of ruining a roast with one of these, if used properly, are virtually insignificant and given the price of meat these days that can only be a good thing. The Meater is a well made piece of equipment and as far as I am concerned and I am glad I’ve got one!
