My baby was born prematurely and came home from NICU at 37 gestational weeks. The flow of the size 1 nipples in the Philips Avent bottle starter kit was far too fast for my baby and most of the formula ended up on her clothes instead of in her mouth. The first flow nipples were much better and we didn’t have that problem anymore. We used the first flow nipples for a couple of months when we could tell she was ready for size 1. I don’t know why this isn’t included in the starter kit as it’s great for newborns who were born at term as well.

A lot of people/blogs/moms talk about ‘nipple confusion’ which really isn’t what’s happening.A breastfed baby that goes from Mom’s slower let down to a faster flow bottle nipple will come to prefer the faster flow, because it is less work for a quicker reward (for lack of a better word).We had experienced a slight breast strike when we used a 0+ nipple, more gassiness, and not being able to keep up my supply with the amount being eaten even when pace feeding, but switching to these nipples our LO eats at a slower pace, doesn’t take in as much air as he isn’t having to gulp quickly to keep up with a faster flow, and less spit up!Whenever someone mentions they are having issues with their BF baby and bottles being eaten too quickly I recommend switching to a preemie nipple.Love that the Avent bottles are also compatible with my breast pump.
