Introduce the Toilet

Even if your child is partially familiar with the toilet, this guide goes beyond other potty training books to help you start a formal potty training process. That way his ideas about it come from you, not somewhere else. The more the child knows about the toilet and bathroom, the more comfortable he will be when training starts. For instance, “Little Bob, this is called the toilet or the potty. When you’re a big boy, you sit on this to pee or poop instead of using a diaper. When you’re all done, you flush the toilet, like this. It’s not a toy, so we don’t play with it.”

Always Be Pottying

This potty book will help you stay patient though the process. Your child shouldn’t leave your eyesight ever. Wherever she goes, you go, reminding her every step of the way that she needs to tell you when she needs to go potty. This is the most stressful part of potty training: You have explained everything to your child and she hasn’t had an accident yet, so you have no idea how she will respond and react. Usually, kids are surprised when pee starts running down their legs, especially if they have never worn underwear before—but you never know until it happens the first time.

An Empty Bladder

To set your child up for overnight success, it’s important that she goes to the bathroom before going to sleep, whatever time of day that is. If your child goes to sleep with a full bladder, she’ll wet the bed. She just can’t help it. A little trick is to have kids go to the bathroom 30 minutes before bedtime, and then one more time as the very last thing they do before hopping into bed. That way, they have had two chances to empty their bladders, which are now, most likely, completely empty.

Reviews

  1. Best Potty Training Guide
We read this book a few times before toilet training our daughter. We followed the book 100%. Our daughter was not fully trained in 3 days; however, it’s important to keep in mind every child is unique and not to set unrealistic expectations. For us, it took 5 days before we were done with accidents. Number 2 is still tricky, but the book explains to expect that. All in all, I would recommend this book as we found great success.

  2. Terrific method, buy and read before you start anything!
Well, this method has worked for both children so far, each were accident free by the third day. The second child, being stubborn beyond belief, wore the same underpants for the whole of day three, including during her nap. My advice to you is to get the book and read it before you do anything. The book covers the before, during and after, and you will want the complete picture before you even start. There is a psychological setup that is key to bring in.

  3. wise guidelines
loved the practical and positive approach; unsure about giving candy as an incentive/reward, so I need to look for something that will hold the toddler’s interest. Otherwise, very pleased with the sensible advice.

  4. Worked!
Great information with list of things to get to prepare. I believe my little one was 2yrs 3 months or 2 yrs 4 months when I potty trained her using this book. Day three or four we had 100% success including staying dry at night and naps. She did have a few regressions which I wasn’t expecting so much, but those only lasted a few days. She does really great. Absolutely using this book for my next little one, when it’s time, and recommending it to others.

  5. It really worked!
Ok so im not even sure how i got so lucky. We started on Saturday August 26, and i stayed home from work on monday, i followed the book pretty much to a tee with a few minor changes (she still uses diapers at nap and bedtime because they cost a fortune and did not want to toss them). We did chocolate M&M’s, stickers and prizes lol I went over the top and i know i did…1 sticker for pee, 2 for Poop, once she got to 5 stickers she got a prize from the treasure chest (which was a variety of things from books to toys some wrapped some open) and if she pooped she got a prize from the box because she picked it up by the second day. By monday she was fully potty trained. She only had 1 accident Sat and Sun first thing in the morning. And now just over a week later she holds her bladder through naps and on a few nights she has held her bladder over night for the 13 hours she sleeps. I really think she was just so ready for it and thats what made the difference but im a first time mom so what do i know…all i know is i am very lucky!

  6. Regular
Some of the advice is intangible, although these are good tips. It’s convenient to choose which ones you’re capable to follow, in your own way.

  7. First Time Mom Recommends
My *nearly* 2.5 year old son is tough. He’s smart as a whip, but he’s extremely demanding and difficult. He has been putting up a fight for diaper changes for a year. He never showed many typical signs of readiness besides taking a peak at mom or dad sometimes. We were so tired of the tantrums and bargaining that we said enough, let’s do this. As with the baby bottle and pacifier, we went cold turkey. This had to work because there was no going back. We gave him 2 days notice and he said he was excited. Here we are at the end of day 2 and he had 1 accident today. I felt so confident in his abilities, I even deviated from the book and took him outside for a bit. I made a sheet with 25 stars on it. He gets to put 1 sticker for each pee or poop and gets a gummy too. After 25 stickers, he’s getting a trip to the toy store to buy something for 25$ as a “graduation ” gift. He’s already at 16 stars. I’m still a newbie at parenting, but I think we’re more scared than kids. Don’t get me wrong, this approach was exhausting, especially since we have a 5 month old too, but holy was this worth it. Good luck everyone!

  8. BEST POTTY TRAINING METHOD
my 27 month old took 4 days to be fully potty trained, even though the book does say 3 days, I almost gave up at the end of the first day because it was quite messy, but she did learn it quick as I did everything the book talks about! highly recommend!

  9. I’ve used this method with my first two children and am about to use it on my 3rd. I love how simple and straightforward the process is and how core training is done in 3 days.

  10. Incredible tips to make it in the potty trining realm. Can’t wait to try everything, it really does describe every situation and quick solves

  11. Potty trained my daughter (just turned 2) and son (2 and 4 months) within 3 days following the methods in this book. Easy to follow and implement if you have a busy life with not a lot of down time.

  12. I had my doubts at first, but followed the plan to the word and it really took 3 days ! Must say that the child should be ready so 2.5- 3 yrs is the ideal age – as the book says !

  13. It’s well written, but I don’t think giving candy as a price to children that are between 2 and 3 is the correct choice. In general it has good tips but you have to change it to your preferred way of doing things, following this to the detailed I really don’t recommend.
