Not a puzzle. High quality construction kit. Poor music box.
First, this is not a puzzle. That would suggest that you’re on your own to figure out how to put it together. I supposed you could try that, but that’s not the intention. This is a construction kit that comes with detailed, well done, instructions. The main body is made up of laser cut wood, with additional pieces made of metal, and plastic. The motor mechanism that provides the animation of the bow, and contains the music box, is metal + plastic and spring wound powered. The wooden pieces are cut with very high resolution, and the painted graphics look very good.All of that is great, but when it comes to the music box, not so good. The melody this plays sounds like it’s dying… even after winding it up a lot. It’s got two melodies… the main obvious melody which is louder, and then this lingering background melody that seems like its completely out of whack with the main melody. I reached out to the vendor about this, and they responded that this is normal, operational sound. I watched the sound mechanism under a x10 magnifying glass and I can see that the secondary melody is intentional, not operational. Without doing a visual audio analysis (I’m a digital musician) I’d guess that the secondary melody is not placed on the cylinder properly, resulting in being out of sync with the main melody – and actually should be heard as just one melody. To be sure this wasn’t common of music boxes, its been a long time since I heard one, I searched online for this same melody music box, and found much better, clearer melody ones. Since I brought this up with the vendor (who I think is actually the manufacturer), they have put up a video with just the music box audio in it. It sounds correct, so there may just be a bad batch of these out there.Fully wound, the melody plays ~3m 30s.I’m a little unsure of how to rate this. If it weren’t for the music box, I’d give it a 5 star for creativity, ingenuity, and just an all around great product. This company has come along way from those dinosaur kits they made back in 2008.
A great model that plays music when completed.
I like building 3D puzzles and models especially when they are functional. I have assembled several ROKR kits and have always been very happy with the quality and ease of assembly.This Cello model kit arrived very nicely packaged in a giftable box.The box contains sheets of thin wood with all of the pieces cut out. All you need to do is pop out the pieces as you need them. Many of the pieces have a red/blue color which really adds to the look of the completed model.There are 199 pieces included and you do not need any glue to assemble.The user manual is very detailed and has a lot of images that help make this a straight forwards assembly.Once assembled this cello will play the song “The Blue Danube”. As the song plays the bow goes back and forth over the cello and many visible gears turn. It really looks cool as it plays.I am very happy with this Cello wooden building set. It is well-made and easy to assemble.This is perfect for the person who likes to build models as well as for the music enthusiast.The price is very fair and I do recommend it.
Does requite a bit of work to put together, but looks nice
While you could probably put this thing together without, I find it easiest to have a hobby knife and sandpaper to make things go together a little more smoothly. Once together it looks quite nice, though the colors seem a little more muted in person than they do in the images. Overall I’m quite happy with the results although I do occasionally notice the gears getting stuck on occasion. However, I’ve found those kind of problems on every wooden model set I’ve built so I suspect it’s more a problem with the fact I’m working with wood rather than any kind of quality control issue. Overall still a really cool model to build at a decent price (under $62 with coupon).

This puzzle is lots of fun to build. I like the price point. It is well made and would make a great gift!
