Does the job – lock gets stiff
Bought this to keep my dog from running down the stairs. It definitely does the job intended, itâs easy to assemble, sturdy and is aesthetically pleasing. However, after only having for a few weeks the locking mechanism has become stiff – just how others have mentioned in their reviews. The lock becomes so stiff that it becomes stuck and almost impossible to open. My hand has been sore from trying to open it – luckily my husband was able to take the lock apart and put it back together⦠it may be a temporary fix but works for now. I think if youâre looking for a gate for your dog try and find something that doesnât have the âsafety lockâ feature. But if youâre looking for something that toddlers canât get open – this is a good choice but be aware itâs difficult for even adults.

Nice solid safety gate
I’m using it as a barrier to prevent access for my dog while allowing cats to pass under. Seems to be solid construction. I only needed the smallest extension for my purpose. It takes a modicum amount of effort to install but not more than expected. Although the instruction diagram does show this it is not clearly written to not cut the plastic tie that holds the swinging gate to the upright arm until after the gate is installed. If you do cut that tie (which I did in my haste) then the upright arm springs away forcing you to hold it together with one hand until you can adjust enough tension with the compression bolts to force the gate into the right position. The latching mechanism takes some coordination to release it which is the way it should be to prevent a child from being able to open the gate. I like the adjustable swing stops that can either lock the gate in the closed position or prevent the gate from swinging past the midline in either direction. For my purpose that should prevent my dog from being able to open the gate by jumping and pushing on the swinging gate.
NOT SAFE and nothing but headaches. Do not buy.
As many other have experienced, my gate was also âpre-ownedâ. The installation âstop signâ was missing and you could tell it was repackaged. There were also signs of light use. Luckily the pieces were all present but it was annoying to disassemble the gate, position pieces in a way that wouldnât show previous wear, use tie wraps to secure the door before installing, and basically throw out the instructions and figure it out myself. I shouldnât have ignored the other users, you will almost certainly get a pre-owned item if you buy this.UPDATE: after 4 months of steady use, the gate has begun to bend along the bottom. As a result, my child was able to pull the gate out of place! Luckily, I am only using the gate at the bottom of the stairs as instructed. There is a design flaw when installing with all extension pieces. The extensions have weak plastic couplings which do not fit securely. With regular use, the plastic fittings at the joints will begun to bend. Since counter-pressure is used to secure the gate in place, a bent gate becomes extremely dangerous. The more you tighten it to secure it, the more it begins to bow and can eventually be snapped out of place with very little force. I had to buy steel braces to install along the bottom to re-enforce the frame. This design flaw results in a gate that is NOT SAFE when using all extensions for a wider entry. Do not buy if planning for use with all extensions or if you want something that works without lots of hassles and DIY re-enforcement.If you do end up buying this, follow the warnings and DO NOT place this gate at the top of stairs. This gate is not safe and your child could die if used improperly.

Major issues opening & closing
It was easy to install & worked great the first couple of days. Iâve only had this gate a few days and already the mechanism to open & close no longer works. Itâs a two step process. First you have to slide top button and while holding that you need to push up on button. I can slide the top piece, but itâs not pushing the lock out of the way when you press up on the bottom button. The lock just stays out so you canât open or close the gate. Since I can no longer lock the gate, money down the drain and I have another crappy gate in front of this one. Now I have to find a 3rd alternative to keeping my cats separated. Very, very disappointed.
