An accessible guide for vegan, vegetarian, or veg-curious parents from the dietitian duo behind online community Plant-Based Juniors®–includes a bonus chapter on feeding infants up to six months!
More of us are turning to plant-focused diets for our health and the health of the environment. But there haven’t been reliable, evidence-based resources out there for a new generation of compassionate, conscientious parents–until now. The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler is your go-to resource, offering easy-to-digest nutritional facts and guidelines that aren’t available elsewhere, with a special focus on the most important period of a child’s life when it comes to developing good eating habits: infancy and toddlerhood.
Whitney and Alex discuss:
• the PB3 plate: a visual guide to structuring meals that are nutritionally balanced–1/3 fruits and vegetables; 1/3 legumes, nuts and seeds; and 1/3 grains and starches–and easy to adapt for the entire family
• how to meet needs for critical nutrients such as iron
• a primer on both traditional purees and the baby-led weaning/feeding approach
• strategies for dealing with challenges such as picky eaters
• sorting fact from fiction when it comes to nondairy milks and other substitutes
• 50+ plant-based recipes created specifically for stages from first bites to age three
As dietitians and moms, Whitney and Alex pored over nutrition journals and called on the experts to learn how to provide their babies with the best diet possible. They found that plant-based diets are associated with a reduced risk of obesity, decreased cholesterol levels, and increased fruit and vegetable intake; in short, not only are they safe for kids, they’re pretty freaking awesome.

Confetti Guacamole
This confetti guacamole is a great way to pack in the veggies. We like to add bell peppers, carrots, kale, and tomatoes, but feel free to mix it up! Use a food processor to get vegetables uniformly chopped in record speed.
Place peas in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until the peas are smooth. In a medium bowl, use a fork to mash the peas, avocado, lime juice, finely chopped veggies, cilantro, minced garlic, and salt/pepper, if using.Serve on a preloaded spoon for baby-led weaners, with pita bread or black bean taquitos, or on its own!

Amazing resource
This book is an incredible resource – I bought it because of the excerpt where the authors relayed misconceptions doctors may have about plant-based diets for children as I wanted to arm myself with information. I am so lucky I decided to purchase this – it talks in great detail about nutrient needs and how to meet them at each stage of your babyâs development, and even talks later about the psychology of how to raise an adventurous eater. It does have recipes at the end but they feel like a bonus – the technical information the book outlines is gold and provides much-needed guidance to parents trying to figure out how to feed a plant-based child. 10000% recommend!!
SO helpful
I wish I had this book before my LO was born – I found it so hard to get accurate info on a plant-based diet but this book has been a lifesaver. I am still reading through the beginning but it is jam-packed with useful data and all the recipes I’ve tried so far have been a hit.
Absolutely fantastic book!
Anyone wanting to go the plant based/vegan journey with their children this is THE book! So much excellent nutritional advice by these awesome ladies and it makes it easy and fun. They also have a Instagram page which os helpful too but this book has absolutely everything you need to know!
Great book for plant based families
The first half of the book is full of useful information about feeding and vitamins, the second half is full of recipes. I learned a lot.
Great book with great info and recipes
Overall great book with great recipes and great nutritional info. Easy to read and understand. I really like that the book has lots of information and not just recipes. I like the little summaries at the end of each chapter. Great for all parents looking for health info on food for kids. Recipes are simple and easy to follow which is a plus.
AMAZIIING
I love everything about this book! Itâs packed with so much amazing information and sooo many helpful tips! I would recommend this book to everyone! Love love love!
Great book
Lots of good information
Very pleased with the purchase
So far used half of the recipes. They all were a success. I definitely would recommend the book.great purchase.
This book is a fantastic resource for parents who are looking to raise a healthy child (plant-based or not). Some parts are dense with information but they have quick snippets for busy parents. I love the recipes as well. I highly recommend this book!
This book is brilliant. It’s annoying 2 reviewers have knocked stars off because one didn’t read the description of the book and another mentions not giving quinoa before 2 which is completely untrue! I feel it’s unfair on the book to take stars off because you’ve not done your research, eg a quick Google.Anyway, the book is brilliant and really reassuring. So much information and simple tweaks such as adding vit c foods with iron rich foods for max absorption. Very informative but still easy reading without being overbearing. Fascinating stuff!
I really wanted to like this book as being a plant-based mum I wanted to offer my little one lots of yummy, healthy treats. I made a few recipes from the book now and somehow they never came out as expected. I just took the veggie omelette cups out of the oven and they are just a disappointment. I also had to add much more water as I could not process the mixture with my Vitamix to become smooth.I also tried the BLW banana pancakes which also didn’t work. One point to know is that they use quinoa in some of their recipes – I read in another book that quinoa should not be given to babies younger than 2 years.I really like the nutrition section and the style of the book – so 3 stars in total.
Amazing easy and realty healthy recipes for the whole family , amazing information and written in a welcoming way. Highly highly recommended.
Absolutely living for the recipes in this book. Itâs also so good they go over which nutrients and in what amounts they require At each age.Itâs good they tell you that you will require supplements for plant based babies and donât pretend that they wonât need them.Lovely the recipes have âfamilyâ alterations so adults & older kids can eat and enjoy the meals as well. Very happy I bought this one.
