From celebrated children’s-food author Lisa Barnes, Cooking for Baby is a fully illustrated, gorgeous, four-color book that takes parents through the basics of preparing nutritious, delicious (and easy!) meals for your child, from six to eighteen months.
Parents today know that one of the best ways to give a baby a great start in life is with wholesome, homemade foods. While ready-made baby food is a convenience that any new parent can appreciate, feeding everyday fresh foods is the best way to teach a child healthy eating habits and an appreciation for good food from the cradle onward.
The eighty recipes in Cooking for Baby make preparing delicious meals for babies and toddlers a breeze, even for busy parents. The recipes are organized by age, showing how to introduce cereal grains and simple vegetable and fruit purees to your infant at six months, how to move on to chunkier foods by eight or nine months, and how to graduate to real meals for young toddlers of twelve to eighteen months to enjoy along with the entire family. When you see how easy it is, with a few smart tips on preparation and storage, you’ll never go back to the jars.
With Cooking for Baby, your youngster will enjoy a wide variety of fresh and interesting foods for a very happy and healthy beginning.

Great starting book!
This book is a must have for beginner parents who are nervous about starting solid foods! Super easy and informative for parents wanting to cook there own baby food. This book has great recipes organized by month to month. Definently a must have!
Beautiful book
I just got this book and it is gorgeous. It is a pleasure to read and look at and I am sure that I will use it a lot once my baby starts solid food. It has easy to follow instructions and I would definitely recommend it for other parents looking to make their own baby food.Update – I am still using this book with my now 2 year old and with my new baby who is just starting solids. So much great tips and easy to make recipes. Definitely buy this for yourself and to give as gifts!!!
Good book
I have not yet made the recipes, but this seems like a good book. I also bought “the best homemade baby food on the planet” book, and I think I will prefer that one (it has soooo much and is very appealing to read), but this book seems to have some different and interesting recipes. I would buy again.
Love this book!
I love how this book has things that are simple, and things that incorporate lots of spices and herbs for older kids to ensure they have an early start at loving healthy foods. It has lots of helpful advice about when to introduce different textures and kinds of foods and ways to make feeding time fun for kids!
this provides a good basis for ideas on how to produce certain types …
If you’re already a reasonably confident cook, this provides a good basis for ideas on how to produce certain types of purées (e.g. dried apricot) and the info at the back on where to get which nutrients (like the ever-important iron) is handy. Not overly heavy, meaning it doesn’t try to plan your every meal from 6 months to 3 years (by 12 months the kid should be table eating if you don’t mind customizing your meals a bit, but everyone goes their own way).
… it is well put together and the pictures are great..
I want to give this higher stars as it is well put together and the pictures are great…Just not quite enough recipes that my family all like – I feel like that is the case for most cookbooks though!
Five Stars
Great recipes with pictures and interesting facts and tips!
Useful, great lay out
Good book to get started and try lots, as in lots, of combinations. Simple and clear for non-cooks like me! My son is a truly adventurous non picky eater so I never needed to do purees, and skipped right onto the more serious recipes based on his ability to take in dairy and other things. Highly recommend especially for tricks in getting veggies into non-veggie dishes. Also, I appreciated the storage tips for food safety on most of the recipes. The 12-18 months section was very useful as the dishes are for the whole family as well.
I love this cookbook! My priorities in a cookbook were: reasonable recipes, beautiful photos, and accurate health information. This gets five stars for all three categories! I read many reviews before picking this cookbook, and I’m so glad that I did.I love the recipes, and their variety. There are simple purees, but not one million repetitious puree recipes. There are also “stages” recipes and even some toddler ones, but these don’t get into crazy “over-gourment” territory. I like that there is a basic baby stock recipe, and other recipes refer back to it, so that even baby’s soup is made with homemade stock. The ingredients and equipment required are very manageable. The photos are perfect. They are inspirational and abundant. I’m very happy with the visual aspects of this book. The health information is also an A+. It’s not a celebrity cookbook, giving bland information. It helps parents air on the side of caution (emphasizing organic, etc) without going overboard and over-worrying parents.Overall, I highly recommend this book! I use this and the Baby Bullet cook book to make all my baby’s food. I don’t need any other cookbooks besides those two!

I am a new mom and this book is a perfect first step to making your own baby food. The recipes are simple to understand. I especially like that the book is divided into age groups so that you can use it until your child is a toddler. There are purees for 6 months and more complex food for the toddlers. I grow much of my own food as we live on a farm so this is perfect for me. The book itself is very engaging with beautiful pictures of the finished product. There are also hints on freezing and storing. To those who say that this book pushes you NOT to feed your child before 6 months of age, this is not true. The author states in the beginning of the book to “keep in mind that every baby develops differently, and that you and your pediatrician are the best judges of what foods your baby should be eating, and when.”There are studies that show that feeding solids before six months increases your child’s risk of obesity and allergies as well as diabetes (just check out the Sears Baby Book, or ask your pediatrician). It is best to wait until 6 months of age, but many start their babies on solids at 4 months. My opinion in talking to other moms and pediatricians is that if at all possible, wait. As long as your baby is gaining well and seems satisfied with breastmilk or formula, why rush them into solids? Of course, for the baby who is not gaining well and seems ravenous at 4 months, they may need to start solids earlier. It is a question of when YOUR baby is ready. This book is for people who want to make their own baby food because they want an alternative to the jarred food that may contain chemicals or the expensive organics. I am an avid cook and collect cookbooks. Now that I am a mother, this is going to the top of the pile!
good book but i hardly used it as most recipes are online
If you read the description, you know what you’re getting with this book. It’s very pretty, and there are some great recipes, but it’s not everything you could possibly want in a baby cookbook. My daughter is just starting solids, so we’re still on the single fruit/veggie stage right now, but I imagine that I’ll get a lot more use out of this book down the road. I like that it has some combinations that I wouldn’t have considered. The pictures are gorgeous, too. That being said, it’s limited in the number of recipes it can offer (those pretty pictures take up a lot of space, after all). It’s definitely a nice tool to have, but if you’re looking for a one stop shop approach to baby cookbooks, this isn’t it.
